Coffee Myth: Does coffee helps relieve indigestion caused by overeating?
It is interesting that many people wonder or even assume that coffee could work as a treatment for indigestion in both eastern and western societies. For some people, coffee definitely gives a laxative effect and some even tend to drink coffee for weight control. It might be one of the reasons people assume that consuming coffee treats overeating. However, there's no solid evidence supporting drinking coffee relieves any discomfort caused by overeating. It might be true that people feel refreshing in the mouth to have some coffee after greasy foods, that's more about the temperature of the beverage and the acidity that the beverage delivered, which depends on the cupping note and roasting level of the coffee bean. Yet, it does nothing in helping digestion.
Drinking coffee is not only unhelpful in indigestion problem, but it is also as well might not be a good choice before or after high sugar and greasy meal. According to The Journal of Nutrition, the University of Guelph from Canada released research concluded that the combination of caffeine and fat influence the removal of sugar from the blood and makes it difficult to lower the blood sugar level which results in raising the load of the liver. They suggest people at risk for metabolic disease and type 2 diabetes to avoid such dietary combinations. So, what can we eat or drink to relieve indigestion caused by overeating? It depends, if there are upset stomach and the indigestion is caused by too much acid in the stomach, you may try some warm ginger tea, or, for indigestion caused by not enough stomach acid, a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in a cup of warm water or simply warm lemon water. However, if you have a sensitive stomach, the safest ways are to go and have a walk and take a warm bath or use a heating bag to warm up your tummy.
Last and most important, lying down is never an option! Other than avoiding fried and fattyrich food in your next meal, lying down is the number one thing you should be avoiding.
