Nyeri is sitting on the central highlands of Kenya as one of the oldest town in Kenya that has been established in the British colonial era. It is now the largest city in the newly created Nyeri County.
Nyeri is a densely populated city and blessed with everything needed to grow high quality coffee, fertile soil and central highlands (lying between the eastern base of the Aberdare (Nyandarua) Range that forms part of the eastern end of the Great Rift Valley,) they are even enjoying the western slopes of Mount Kenya. Coffee in Nyeri grown mainly by smallholders who are organized into quasi-private state-supported and supervised co-operatives or companies for farm input distribution, basic processing and marketing purposes. In 2014, a year after the price of Kenya AA bean had been dropped like disaster, governor of the Nyeri county announced that all of the coffee in the region shall be milled at a single mill (called Sagana) and the coffee should be pooled and sold through a newly formed company. Therefore all coffee beans produced in Nyeri by small farmers were all gathered and mill at the Central Kenya Coffee Mills (CKCM) which is based in Karatina and which mills the farm’s coffee was also included in the process being audited for “Chain of Custody”.
Though there were doubts from the industry about this new arrangement, the authority claimed that this is to save farmers from exploitation by private millers and at the same time encourages farmers to go sustainable farming and improve their agricultural, production and processing levels to achieve even higher quality coffees. When we talk about elevation of quality, how about take a little time to have a look at the grading system of Kenya beans. Kenya coffee grading system class green beans mainly by size, E for elephant, which is the biggest, then PB for peaberry and follow by AA, beans with just a little more than one-fourth inch in diameter. These high quality coffee bean, Kenya Nyeri AA+++ is now available in our store, don't miss out!
